I’ve been fighting with IE over the past three days to complete the new IPS rich text editor.
I’ve decided to merge the two editors into one OOP JS file which has a lot more code re-use and is much more efficient. The new RTE loads almost instantly compared to the current IPB one which takes a few seconds to initialize.
I won’t bore you to death why it took three days to write (not least because of irritiating differences between IE and FF which mean you’re effectively writing two editors) and I won’t blather on about the cool new features which include the floating palettes and extensibility.
Instead, I’ll show you a movie.
(Note, there is no AJAX in the RTE currently. The little palettes are DOM styled and wrapped iFrames. I could have used AJAX, but the iFrames are more suitable for this application. I prefer to use the right tool for the job. After all, just because we’ve bought a new hammer, it doesn’t mean we have to use it to bash screws into the wall).

Wow! That’s the best looking rich text editor I’ve ever seen in a CMS.
Great work!!
Pretty spiffy.
How does the RTE handle images Matt or have you not got that far yet? For me the article manager is the most eagerly anticipated function of the CMS and I’m curious to its’ functionality. Would you be ale to expand on its’ feature-set further?
Great work on the editor so far, I particularly like the way the editor retains the state of text formatting. Most other inline editors I have worked with require the formatting to be added as an afterthought, usually by selecting the text after writing and then applying the formatting.
That’s absolutely incredible.
I can’t wait to actually demo it =D
I miiiiight be able to squeeze in an “Insert Image -> Upload” function into the RTE before IPD v1 is released.
If not, you can add images from around the web via the “Insert Image” palette or use the “Insert IPD Tag” and choose an already uploaded image.
That’s a pretty damned amazing RTE.
Wow! That looks great! I can’t wait to start giving this thing a test drive.
Matt, I want to make sure you remember that us webmasters like to get access to the code while composing in RTE’s. Also, how do you add images? It’s very important to get the thumbnails of images from a directory when adding images to content.
Other then that, looking good!!
I cant believe how much better it looks, you’ve really outdone yourself haha.
Hopefully you will be porting it to IPB some time soon? before 3.0?
The more you show of this CMS the more I want it.
Looks absolutly amazing. But please please include the feature to limit the formating of text to a fixed set of styles. Not all users can handle the responsability that comes whith free choise of font and color. ;o)
Yes but unfortunately the more he show’s of this CMS the more we WANT out of it
I’m looking forward to putting this product through its’ paces. I was also wondering whether the source was accessible like Max pointed out.
I don’t really care for the icons, but nonetheless, very nice.
Pretty cool.
Pretty work !!!
Kudos Matt, this looks absolutely great.
Damn, Matt, that’s oh so svelte and sexy.
Hey Matt,
I just stumbled across this page looking for a text editor. Your rich text editor looks amazing. Don’t know anything about your work but I was just wondering if it’ll be available for public release anytime soon and on what platform. Thanks.

While we’re dabbling in the area of IPD: New Rich Text Editor, The secret to construct wealth online is by means of corporations that present feasible earnings sources not those that present extravagant claims.
