I’ve been a fan of Muse since their debut Showbiz in 1999 and it’s been a pleasure to listen to each album as they develop and mature their sound. A curious mix of classic piano, rock guitars and Matt’s often operatic voice lend a different tone to a well trodden genre.
So, with anticipation, I downloaded their latest album The Resistance and was not disappointed. I’ve had it on repeat all day and it’s just perfect.
I found their previous album Black Holes & Revelations a little patchy and less accessible than Absolution. For me, The Resistance is a return to their best work; mixing Absolution’s hard / soft edges with the energy of Origin Of Symmetry.
There’s a lot of different styles. The opening track reminds me of the theme of Doctor Who from the 80s while United States of Eurasia sounds like Butterflies and Hurricanes filtered through Queen. I’m sure Freddie is grinning in his grave. Undisclosed Desires sounds about as close to mixing hip-hop with Depeche Mode as you’re ever going to get; mixing up drum machines and synths.
The real beauty is in the last three tracks: Exogenesis parts I, II and III. Quintessentially classic Muse mixing up classic pianos with rock guitar and operatic vocals. The result is just sublime. If you enjoyed Blackout from Absolution, you’ll love it.
Enough from me, just buy it now!
