Twitter Weekly Updates for 2010-01-31

by Matt Mecham on January 31, 2010

  • Spending far too much time and money in M&S food stores recently. Their fresh produce is great. Trying to buy my way into the middle classes #
  • Trying to watch "Unbreakable" on Sky. Ironically the signal keeps breaking up making it almost impossible to watch. #
  • Watching bit of Band Of Brothers. Love that series. Bit of a WWII nut. Have signed pic of real Bill Guarnere in my office. #
  • Can't seem to receive updates to my timeline via API. Twitter fail? Hopefully resolved soon, need to test Twitter integ. #
  • Twitter's API appears to be working again now. Hooray, etc. #
  • Still not getting any updates to my timeline via API. *grump* #
  • Fighting with Facebook Connect. They've updated their APIs since #ipb 3, so I'm updating them. Some tricky nonsense though. #
  • Like now they require extended perm 'offline_access' to get status update when not active in FB and board (essential for sync) #
  • And they recommend you ask for all perms together to minimise pop-up boxes. Great. Only "offline_perms" can't be chained. As you get… #
  • … an error saying "You must be logged in" when you are *trying* to log in. So you have to do it after log in/connect via UserCP #
  • Which isn't a major hassle other than it flashes up the "Extended Permissions" FB box over the UserCP for a second before vanishing. #
  • …once you have accepted 'offline_access' permission. #
  • Might try and find an elegant way around that. But for now, it works and will enable #ipb to publish status updates and share links. #
  • Good news is that all depreciated methods have been removed in favour for the new methods. #
  • And success. Updating Facebook status from an #ipb http://bit.ly/4EXsbo – and – http://bit.ly/4tXSgk #
  • Oh, and it updated Twitter of course: http://bit.ly/7TZpt9 #
  • Oh, hello timeline via API. I missed you! #
  • Just spammed my own Facebook application with a dozen test updates before realising I wasn't logged into my test Facebook account. Ooops. #
  • On the upside, I managed to update my own status a dozen times in under a minute, so clearly FB lifted their inane "3 updates a day" policy. #
  • Still fighting with Facebook. Integrating the new 'permanent' session key. Slightly bothersome when accounting for existing members. #
  • Going slightly loopy trying to keep relationships between my front-end code, my FBC glue code, the FBC client code and the FBC REST/API code #
  • New FB stuff done. Very nice it is too. More robust and still allows get/set data even when logged out of FB itself. Well done #facebook #
  • 3 weeks on (mostly) unmoderated #paleo eating: 10lb weight loss, 4cm off waist. Eat loads of stuff and use lots of olive/nut/coconut oils. #
  • Stumbled across another nice #IPB Gallery/Blog/Downloads/IP.Content powered site – http://seadoosportboats.com/ #
  • Another another #IPB /Gallery/IP.Content site – http://www.wanderthewest.com/ Great use of photography! #
  • I seriously need a hair cut. I have an impressive sweep over going on. Too time consuming to actually go out and get it cut. Suggestions? #
  • Added a little permission check thing for use with #ipb and #facebook Clarifies which permissions are needed and why http://bit.ly/87F47f #
  • If I said 'reverse phycology doesn't work' – would that be an example of reverse phycology? #
  • UK emerges from recession – http://bit.ly/5n7UrI – Let's all celebrate by taking out another credit card or maybe a second home! #
  • Watching a bit of Jurassic Park. Reckon the CGI still stands up 17 years on. Remember seeing it at the cinema. Was floored at the time. #
  • I hope Apple just announce the iPad so we can put an end to all the rumours. It's getting tiresome now. #
  • Would be awesome though if they didn't have one and the announcement was just iLife 10 that included a Photoshop style app. #
  • I think there'd be a riot. "We want our giant iPhone! I got these massive pockets sewn into my jeans specifically for it!" #
  • Can you imagine the size of armband required to use it on a run? #
  • May I present the new #iPad sportsband. http://bit.ly/bzRtcq – Take your e-books for a run! #
  • Morning world. I've been working on a new #ipb feature since 6am. Should make a fair few folk rather happy. #
  • RT @dancryer: Woh, this is cool – Pure CSS coke can: http://www.romancortes.com/blog/pure-css-coke-can/ #
  • Three hours until the mysterious #iPad is announced. Although it's leaked more than the Titanic. #
  • Predictions? Enhanced iPhone OS, Wireless keyboard optional? Mostly consumer device for playing games, movies, music, e-books, e-mags #
  • Apple certainly wouldn't want it to be a productivity machine. They'd much rather you use a MacBook for writing your novel. #
  • This is amazing and frightening – http://bit.ly/dplZv4 – Link /via @thetechrevo @danmcl0703 #
  • Did God get this much coverage when he finished the garden of Eden? "New Apple revealed, Adam goes nuts". #ipad #
  • #iPad seems a little luke-warm so far. Large consumer device with wifi. Interesting Apple seem to be marketing it as a home device. #
  • Although you do have to feel a bit sorry for aApple. No way could it have lived up to the hype hysteria unless it resurrected Jesus. #
  • Hmmm #ipad definitely being sold as portable home terminal for gaming, etc. Flash memory means few movie downloads unless streaming. #
  • Price is now crucial. Anything more that £350/$600 and it will seem too expensive. #
  • iWork on the #iPad is an interesting move. Great for Starbucks "office workers". Loads of places have free wi fi too. #
  • Can't think of a single demographic that *needs* an iPad. Price is crucial. Mobile workers won't choose it over netbook. #
  • Right now only the silly-rich/fanboys or really bored will rush out and get one. Can't think how it would emhance my lifestyle. #
  • Certainly wouldn't use it much at home (have macbook). Wouldn't take it out (too big, no 3G). What would one do with it? #ipad #
  • Oh, tiny data allowance built into the cost? Hmmm. Not a lot though. Ensures we won't see it UK until xmas. #
  • Ah unlocked 3G. You can use your own SIM and $500? A *lot* more interesting. Means, what, £349 here? #
  • Aah. Keyboard dock + 3G and suddenly its a lot more attractive for road warriors. #ipad Fairly good price points too. #
  • Sorry, yes $629 for 3G version. Still non-3G version with wifi is fairly attractive with the number of free hotspots rolling out. #ipad #
  • Will wait and see how we get screwed on the inflated exchange rate but £349 for non 3G and £429 for 3G version wouldn't be awful. #
  • Verdict: As expected a lifestyle/consumer device. No real killer feature. Price OK. Not a must have but Apple know this. #
  • Me? Don't have a need for one. More importantly, I can't create a need for one. Looks slick though. #ipad. #
  • Apple are clever though. No usb, no dvd drive, etc. Micro payments for useful content. Its revitalised the company. Profit is good. #
  • Essentially that's where Apple are way ahead of MS. Popular consumer devices drip feeding them cash. Its the future! #
  • I would suspect that at least initially, Apple will be making a small loss on the devices. Worth it for the revenue. #
  • What I really want to know is whether the #iPad makes you any good at roller skating. (Too obscure?) #
  • Sod the keyboard dock, what the #ipad needs is a toilet dock. Would give a compelling reason to purchase one. Toilet surfing FTW #
  • #iPad is awesome! Would be cooler if it was a bit smaller so it fit in a pocket though. And could make phone calls. #
  • I'm going to get two iPads. One for each eye. Rumour says they reduce puffiness. #
  • And with that… Goodnight! #
  • Morning! #
  • RT @stephenfry: I've been and gone and blogged it. http://bit.ly/dw2FXI #iPad (Very nice review – worth a read) #
  • I get the feeling that the #iPad is a foot in the door for Apple, much like the 1st gen iPhone was. I
nteresting to see how it matures. #
  • Even more interesting to see how I managed a line break there. #
  • A few thoughts on the iPad – http://bit.ly/8YonmR I shall be quiet about it now. Maybe. #
  • RT @serafinowicz: Good morning! http://bit.ly/bm1mq1 (Funny stuff! Love the new iPad demo). #
  • Finally got my hair cut. Front page news, I know. #
  • Enjoying Biffy Clyro's latest album. Even if the band name sounds like a clown with an STI. #
  • Agree with these #iPad thoughts from @kierDarbyhttp://bit.ly/ckiNyH – Can be summed up with: Desirable but not essential. #
  • Getting restless. Been coding the same feature all day and it's numbing my brain. Simple stuff. Exciting stuff done. #
  • Hell yes! Know plenty of "Passive Aggressors" RT @Oatmeal: How to suck at Facebook http://bit.ly/cqMlqA #
  • Just filed my tax return. Technically not quite last minute. There's a whole weekend to go before it was overdue. #
  • Have to say that the online filing is really rather nice and almost idiot proof. Remember the days of paper returns. It was really confusing #
  • Sick of people telling you the #iPad is a flop? Get the to read this http://bit.ly/d9bx1P – Reactions to the 1st Gen iPod in 2001. #
  • 1st Gen iPod reaction: "$400 for an Mp3 Player! I'd call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time" Or, not. #
  • Is it really only 10:30am? I've managed to file my tax return, upgrade my BB handset and Orange plan, start Debbie's harddrive back-up. #
  • Oh, and almost wrap up the mystery new feature in #ipb. Details later. #
  • Mind you, I did start at 06:30. #
  • Love this javascript powered OS website http://www.michaelv.org.nyud.net/ /via @zef @mweststrate #
  • I have misplaced my banana. That is a literal statement. #
  • Really simple to switch HDD in a MacBook. 3 screws and you're in. http://mypict.me/3jmPw #
  • Re MacBook HDD swap, thanks to @madmax for a few pointers this morning. He had done the same the day before. Remembered the mounting bolts. #
  • Next on the butcher's block is our Sky+ box. Almost all recordings drop frames and have patches of bad sync or incoherent dialogue. Annoying #
  • My awesome son icing cakes with mummy. Wearing a hard hat. http://mypict.me/3jPOn #
  • iPad iPad iPad. Did I mention the iPad? Just sayin' in case the iPad hasn't featured in your timeline in the last 30 seconds. #
  • Fantastic news – Google dropping support for Internet Explorer 6http://bit.ly/9C9DrU /via @dotbrett @BreakingNews #
  • You have to admit, regardless of your Apple stance, no other company gets the 'net buzzing quite like they do. #
  • Recession, earth quakes, millions out of work and we're arguing over whether we need a large iPod touch or not. #
  • Anyway. Ssh. That's enough. Can't believe you brought up the iPad again. #
  • Minor Sky+ drama. Tried upgrading HDD. Somehow disturbed sat dish second tuner cable. Failed to display some chnls while recording. #
  • Figured it was the new HDD. Replaced original HDD but problem remained. Re-seated cable and it seems ok ATM. #
  • Original HDD still causing recordings to skip and drop audio. Bah. #
